What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your skin fade begins with a consultation to decide:

• Fade height: low (subtle, around an inch of skin), mid (starting near brow level), or high (close to the crown for maximum contrast)
• Top length and style: whether you want a crop, quiff, textured finish, or something else
• Beard connection: how the fade will blend into facial hair if you wear a beard

The barber then uses multiple clipper guards to create the initial gradation, before refining the transition with detail trimmers and foil shavers to achieve that signature skin-close finish. Scissor work shapes the top, edges are lined up sharply around the hairline and neck, and the whole cut is blended until every transition is smooth and seamless.

Who It Suits and Key Considerations

Skin fades work across straight, wavy, and curly hair and can be tailored to different face shapes by adjusting fade height and top weight. The style is versatile enough for both professional and casual settings when kept neat.

A few things to bear in mind:

• The cut exposes the scalp, so any head shape irregularities or scars may be more visible—your barber can adjust placement to minimise this
• Sensitive skin? Let your barber know if you experience razor bumps, eczema, or psoriasis so technique can be adapted
• Because the fade finishes above the natural hairline, growing it out may involve an awkward phase—lower fades offer more flexibility

Maintenance and Aftercare

Skin fades are low maintenance day-to-day but require regular upkeep to stay sharp. Most clients return every 2–3 weeks as regrowth quickly softens the crispness of the fade.

Between cuts:

• Moisturise your scalp where hair is cut very close to avoid dryness
• Use sunscreen on exposed skin if you spend time outdoors—newly faded areas can burn easily
• Style the top with suitable products (matte clays, pomades, sea salt sprays) to keep shape and texture while sides stay neat
• Avoid harsh scratching immediately after your cut when skin is freshly shaved

Skin Fade vs. Taper: What's the Difference?

While both involve gradually shortening hair, a taper reduces length down to the natural hairline while leaving some hair visible. A skin fade continues past that point, exposing the scalp and finishing above the hairline for a bolder, more dramatic look. If you want the sharpest contrast and the cleanest finish, skin fade is the choice—if you prefer something softer and easier to grow out, a taper may suit you better.
